Bocce Ball
History of Bocce
The classic Italian game of bocce is simple, yet combines the strategy of chess with the artistic flair of a Renaissance fresco. The beginnings are unknown, however traces of the game can be found among Egyptians, and graphic representations of figures tossing a ball or polished stone have been recorded as early as 5200 B.C.
It was not until the turn of the century that bocce was organized competitively in the United States. A strong influencing factor was the European immigration to the American continent. Newcomers, trying to retain their original lifestyle, playing the game as a way of duplicating the social environment they left behind. Today, in campgrounds and parks throughout the country, RVers are relishing the friendly competitiveness of the game.
While modern-day bocce bears little resemblance to the early versions, one thing is certain: through its evolution the objective has been constant ? try to come as close as possible to a fixed target as possible.
Basically the game involves rolling resin bocce balls down a long rectangular court at a small target called the object ball or pallino. The game is played to 12 points. The official standardized size of a regulation bocce court is 12x76 feet. Two key elements in winning a game are the ability to roll for points called pointing, and hitting, commonly referred to as ?spocking? or bombing. This involves intentionally knocking your opponent?s ball away from the pallino. If this is done with skill, you can end up with your ball closest to the pallino while your opponent?s ball merrily rolls down the hill.
